MISSOURI MEERSCHAUM COMPANY
Over 150 years of tradition in making pipes from corn cob
The founder of the company was the Dutch-American immigrant woodworker Henry Tibbe, who started producing pipes in 1869. In 1907, the H. Tibbe & Son company was transformed into the Missouri Meerschaum Company. The word "Meerschaum" in the name comes from the German word for "sea foam". This is Turkish clay used in high-quality pipes. Tibbe compared his light, chilly porous pipes to the more expensive sepiolite pipes and coined the name "Missouri Meerschaum" for his products. Today, the company owns approximately 150 acres of farmland in Missouri and has its own corn crops, and sometimes contracts additional acreage with local farmers. Thanks to them, Washington, Missouri has long been known as the "Corn Pipe Capital of the World." Their factory currently produces 3,500 pipes a day and ships them to every state in the US and several other countries.
