A warg is a fantasy creature resembling a wolf, but larger, more predatory and more intelligent, and sometimes endowed with consciousness. The word "warg" (vargr) was used in Old Norse as a euphemism for "wolf" (ulfr), in modern Swedish it means wolf. In Old English, the word "warg" meant "big wolf." The warg motif has been used in fantasy literature. In particular, it was popularized by J.R.R. Tolkien in his books about Middle-earth (the novels The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit) and the film adaptations of his works.
