Today Ryszard Filar is one of the highly respected "elder masters of Polish pipemaking. He started in the workshop of the famous Walat brothers where he worked together with Ryszard Kulpinski.
Kulpinski and Filar joint together after Ludwik Walat’s death establishing their own firm in 1981. But merely two years later the duo separated again in 1983 and both went on to work alone. Curiously their workshops are situated in the same street of Przemysl.
One of a kind freehands - "Autografy" - don't seem to be Mr. Filar's metier. Apparently he prefers the more dignified line and offers mostly classically influenced shapes, finished smooth or (semi)-rusticated and produced in small series. Well executed, friendly smoking pipes for every day and any occasion. He marks his pipes with a "F" in circle and his second name stamped on the shank."
